A tincture is simply a liquid extract of an herb(s) that you take by mouth. That is the simple definition. Moreover, it really IS simple. The nice thing about tinctures is they concentrate the useful chemical constituents and medicinal properties of the plant material into a liquid (usually alcohol, a vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar). Tinctures are more effective than over the counter or prescription medications without the side effects.
Tinctures are best taken on an empty stomach. This gives the herb a chance to get into your system undeterred. Everybody’s body is different. 1-2 droppers initially are more than adequate, from there you can adjust up or down.
A single squeeze is considered one dropperful of tincture. No matter how long your dropper is one squeeze will usually provide the same amount of tincture since the bulb on the dropper is the same size. Squeeze the dropper to release a dose under your tongue. The tincture will enter your system most effectively if taken under the tongue. The tincture will taste very strong. Try to hold it under your tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. If the taste is, too much you may take a sip of juice or water to rid the taste or mix it with your favorite beverage.
